The "F" Word

"Feminism is not a dirty word. It does not mean you hate men, it does not mean you hate girls that have nice legs and a tan, and it does not mean you are a bitch or a dyke, it means you believe in equality -" Kate Nash

Feminism. The "F" word. A small word with a lot of big misconceptions. No, not all feminists are lesbian, not all feminists are against beauty products or other generally beautiful women. Feminism is merely a movement of change towards a world of equality between men and women. So here's a list of reasons why I think Feminism is important in today's society;

1. Freedom of Clothing Choice; Because what you wear doesn't define whether you're 'looking for it' or not. Seriously. In the US a woman is raped every six seconds. That's scary

2. Emotional Equality; Period jokes. Seriously, just because it's that 'time of the month' does not invalidate opinions, attitudes or general outlooks on life. Genitals do not dictate how you act, how you feel, or who you are

3. Because the word 'woman' is used as an insult

4. Expectations of perfection; Yes, it is unrealistic to expect every girl to have the perfect figure, hair and makeup. And quite frankly it is unfair to call anyone, man or woman, up on their physical appearance

5. Pop Culture; I'm talking music here. "Blurred Lines," and "I don't mind" being probably the most prominent hits undermining women

6. Media; Have you ever seen an advertisement with a stay-at-home Dad instead of a stay-at-home Mom?

7. Because vests are often called 'wife beaters.'

8. Wolf Whistling; Because this is still a thing.

9. Because many people I know will probably judge me based on this post; Some will laugh, some will cringe but only few will understand

10. Because the word "feminist" still carries negative connotations

Until next time,
